Providing timely, comprehensive, local sports coverage is not something Kalamazoo News Monitor is built to do. However, we follow several sources for sports stories with general community interest. Below is a short list of online resources that have fresh, local sports content every day, or hour. What resources should we add to this page? The rain-soaked streets of Boston provided less-than-ideal running conditions, but they were the backdrop for history Monday, as Kalamazoo native Julian Borst became the first Special Olympics Michigan athlete to complete the world’s oldest marathon. One of five Special Olympics athletes running the 2019 Boston Marathon, the 22-year-old Kalamazoo Loy Norrix graduate finished in 3 hours, 5 minutes and 8 seconds for a pace of 7:03 per mile.

The final buzzer has sounded for the girls basketball season, marking the time when Michigan's top performers receive year-end honors for their four-month body of work. The Associated Press released its all-state selections last week, and nine players, plus one coach, from the Kalamazoo-area made the cut, ranging from first team to honorable mention for Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4. Selections are made by a voting panel of 10 sports writers from across the state. Inside the halls and walls of Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, the Duckett name is everywhere. Engraved in trophies and next to track and field records are those of TJ and Tico Duckett, football stars who went on to play in college and the NFL. But perhaps the most well-known Duckett at Loy Norrix is the one who raised the boys, the one who's been at the school the longest: gym teacher and track coach Ted Duckett. "He taught my uncle and mom my and he taught my auntie," current student Jermaine McClellan said.

Dawn Jaqua has coached over 1,000 matches and currently sits at No. 21 on the MHSAA’s career victories list with 878, but it’s not the wins and losses that have defined her 20 years atop the Portage Central volleyball program. What Jaqua remembers most is the relationships with her players, and that’s why it was such a difficult decision for her to step down after two decades with the Mustangs. Under Jaqua's tutelage, Portage Central captured 15 conference titles, 10 district championships, two regional crowns and advanced to the state finals in 2009.

Several inches of snow and bitter-cold temperatures postponed a fair share of Friday night high school basketball games across the Kalamazoo area, but the kids that were on the court made it a memorable night for their fans. Among the top performers was Plainwell's Isaac Davis, who poured in a school-record 41 points in a 66-57 win over Paw Paw to move the Trojans to 6-6 overall.

Daisy Ansel needed no introduction to the Richland Gull Lake Girls basketball team. Comstock’s senior shooting guard entered Thursday’s contest against Gull Lake averaging 34 points per game, and the future Grand Valley State Laker put up 22 points on the Blue Devils last season. Gull Lake head coach Mike Balcom’s message to his defense was simple: “Double her every time she touches the ball, basically.” The strategy paid off for Balcom's Blue Devils.
