While earning his undergrad degree in business management, Zach Novoselsky started talking to his teammates about things that would have eased the transition from high school to college football, and their responses had one thing in common: They would have benefited from the guidance of someone who had already been through the process.  Athletes Beyond Campus offers just that, with  wo primary services to aspiring football players: mentoring/leadership and skills training. Mentoring serves athletes age 14-18 is done over the phone in 60-minute sessions, and multiple athletes can take part in a single session to lower the per-person rate.

Ice and snow have left their mark on the Kalamazoo-area high school basketball scene this year, but they weren’t able to cool off Samantha Verburg, of the Galesburg-Augusta girls team. In her squad’s only game between last week, the senior guard scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the Rams to overtime against Delton Kellogg on Jan. 18, before falling 52-46.

Building on hometown pride and Kalamazoo’s strong hockey culture, the Kalamazoo Wings and Western Michigan University have announced the first ever WMU Day with the K-Wings this Sunday, January 27. The first 1,200 fans who purchase a special game ticket package will receive a limited edition K-Wings hat co-branded in brown and gold. In addition, $2 from each ticket purchase will benefit the WMU Legacy Scholarship.

Jack Moss, a staple of the Kalamazoo sports scene for more than 50 years, died Tuesday after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 91 years old. Moss was the sports editor of the Kalamazoo Gazette from 1967 until his retirement in 2002.

On a night where the pregame was headlined by the retirement of former K-Wing goaltender Georges Gagnon’s number one jersey, it was current goaltender Jake Hildebrand who headlined the game stopping a career high 52 of 55 shots, as the K-Wings topped the Walleye 4-3 in the shootout.

Mitch Zajac spent four years saving touchdowns as a linebacker on the Western Michigan football team. Last month, the former Broncos star helped save a life on an icy stretch of I-96. Driving to work at 5 a.m. on the eastbound highway near Howell, the Holt native came across a two-car crash that left a midsize SUV flipped on its roof and straddling the shoulder and the left lane.

The #10 WMU Broncos hockey team fell in the finale of the weekend series against #2 St. Cloud St. Huskies The Broncos fell in a 3-5 effort. This makes the second loss in a row for the Broncos after having not lost in their previous ten.

A valiant effort against nationally ranked USC ended with a lifelong lesson for the 2017 Western Michigan football team. Trailing 48-31 in the final minutes, WMU head coach Tim Lester instructed his team to hold back on the extra point following USC’s final touchdown, so Jake Olson, a blind long snapper for the Trojans, could make his college football dream a reality.

The KVCC Women's basketball team back on the court this season after being forced to shut down last season after just 13 games. The Cougars forfeited the remainder of their games after losing the majority of their roster to injuries, transfers and academic issues.
